Alappuzha Backwaters

The most celebrated water festival in Alappuzha district.

The emerald backwaters of Kerala annually witness the enthralling snake boat races coinciding with the Onam season. The oarsmen rowing the snake boat or the ‘Chundan Vallam’ along with the chanting or the ‘Vanchi Paattu’ is indeed a great treat to your eyes. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, the pride of Alappuzha marks the beginning of the Champions Boat League (CBL).

The water sport that has a glorious history of about 400 years typically incorporates 12 different locations throughout the state during the months of August – November. The competing groups for the competition start preparing months before the eventful day. The other CBL locations in the Alappuzha district include Karuvatta, Pulinkunnu, Kainakkari, Pandanadu, and Kayamkulam.
